Het is ‘Wist je dat?’ –woensdag!

We willen graag met jullie allerlei info en weetjes delen over salsa/latin cultuur: de muziek, de dans, de artiesten en heel belangrijk de geschiedenis. Voor sommigen zullen bepaalde feitjes al bekend zijn en voor anderen totaal niet. Het gaat erom dat iedereen iets meekrijgt van deze mooie cultuur.
Vandaag trappen we af met niemand minder dan muzikaal genie: Tito Puente.
Tito Puente (1923 -2000) wordt de King of Latin Music genoemd. Hij was een componist, songwriter en bandleader. Tito was een ‘timbalero’, wat inhield dat hij de timbales (heel simpel gezegd: twee hoogklinkende trommels op een statief) als instrument speelde. Zijn bekendste nummers zijn ‘Ran Kan Kan’, ‘Babarabatiri’ en niet te vergeten ‘Oye como va’.
Wist je dat Tito Puento:
· Een carrière van meer dan 50 jaar heeft gehad
· Meer dan 400 nummers heeft gecomponeerd, 120 albums heeft opgenomen en 6 Grammy’s heeft gewonnen
· In eerste instantie was geinspireerd door Jazz en Swingmuziek en pas later echt latin muziek
· Is begonnen met pianolessen te nemen en zich daarna pas richtte op percussie en timbales. Naast timbales en piano speelde hij ook congas, saxofoon en vibrafoon (soort xylofoon)
· In het begin van zijn carriere in 4 verschillende bands tegelijkertijd speelde, waaronder de The Machito Orchestra.
Machito was in de jaren ’40 een van de mambo en latin jazz pioneers in New York
· Met zijn legendarische Tito Puente Orchestra als een van‘ the Palladium Big 3’ (samen met the Machito Orchestra en Tito Rodriguez Orchestra)werd gezien. The Palladium Ballroom was in de jaren 50 en 60 een plek waar iedereen kwam dansen en grote Latin Big Bands optraden
· ‘Oye como va’ heeft geschreven in 1963, wat later door Santana in de jaren 70 is gecovered. Dit werd uiteindelijk een grote wereldhit
· het woord ‘Salsa’ verafschuwde omdat het de complexiteit en variatie van de Cubaanse Ritmes zoals bijvoorbeeld Mambo, Son, Danzon, Guaguanco en Chachacha niet kon omvatten

We would like to share with you lots of information about our salsa/latin culture, about the music, about the beautiful dance, the amazing artists and the rich history and traditions. For some of you the facts that we share might already be known, for others it might be new information.
We want everybody to learn and to know about this great culture! Today we start with none other than the musical genius: Tito Puente.
Tito Puente (1923 -2000) is called the King of Latin Music. He was a composer, songwriter and bandleader. Tito was a ‘timbalero’, which means that he played the timbales (high pitched drums with metal casing).
He is mostly known for his songs ‘Ran Kan Kan’, ‘Babarabatiri’ and the famous ‘Oye como va’.
Did you know that Tito Puente:
· Has had a musical career that lasted more than 50 years
· Has composed more than 400 songs, 120 albums and has won 6 grammy awards
· was firstly inspired by jazz and swing, and later Latin music
· Started taking piano lessons and later he focussed on percussion and timbales. Besides timbales and piano, he plays the conga, saxophone and vibraphone (sort of xylophone).
· Played with 4 latin bands at the same time. One of them was the famous Machito Orchestra. Machito was one of the mambo and latin jazz pioneers in New York in the 1940’s.
· Was part of the ‘The Palladium Big 3’ with his Tito Puente Orchestra. The other 2 were The Machito Orchestra and The Tito Rodriguez Orchestra.
The Palladium was a ballroom were everybody in the 1950’s and 1960’s came to dance and where the best Latin Big Bands played.
· Composed ‘Oye como va’ in 1963. Later in the 1970’s Santana covered this song which became a huge worldwide hit
· Did not like the word ‘Salsa’ because in his opinion this word does not describe the complexity and variation of the Cuban Rhythms like Mambo, Son, Guaguanco and Chachacha.
