Het is ‘Wist je dat?’ –woensdag!

We willen graag met jullie allerlei info en weetjes delen over salsa/latin cultuur: de muziek, de dans, de artiesten en heel belangrijk de geschiedenis. Voor sommigen zullen bepaalde feitjes al bekend zijn en voor anderen totaal niet. Het gaat erom dat iedereen iets meekrijgt van deze mooie cultuur.
Vandaag hebben we het over de Puertoricaanse zanger Tito Rodriguez (1923-1973).
Wist je dat Tito Rodriguez:
- Tito Rodriguez in 1952 werd geëerd door the Century Conservatory of Music New York voor zijn uniek manier van zingen en stemgeluid.
- Tito behalve dat hij een geweldige zanger was ook meerdere maracas en bongo speelde.
- Tito Rodriguez op 13 jarige leeftijd al zijn eerste muzikaal contract in Puerto Rico tekende.
- Tito in 1937 van Puerto Rico naar New York verhuisde nadat zijn ouders waren overleden. In New York woonde hij bij zijn broer Johnny Rodriguez. In die tijd speelde hij in de band van zijn broer.
- Tito als vocalist in bands van bekende bandleiders speelde zoals Noro Morales, Xavier Cugat en José Curbelo, voordat hij zijn eigen band oprichtte.
- Tito’s band één van de Big Palladium 3 was. De andere twee waren de bands van Machito en Tito Puente.
- Hij met de andere bekende Tito (Puente) een jarenlange rivaliteit had. Ze speelden samen in de band van Jose Curbelo. Maar toen ze beiden hun eigen weg gingen werden ze hevige concurrenten van elkaar. De rivaliteit werd sterk aangewakkerd door de media want het ging vooral over ‘wie de meeste platen verkocht’ of wie the Palladium Ballroom wist uit te verkopen. Desalniettemin, respecteerden beide muzikanten elkaar heel erg.
- Tito Rodriguez veel bekendheid kreeg door zijn ‘boleros’. In de jaren ’60 veranderden veel bands hun stijl en kwam salsa en boogaloo naar de voorgrond. Tito richtte zich in die periode meer op boleros.
- Hij door zijn meest bekende nummer ‘Inolvidable’ (een bolero) bijnaam ‘El Inolvidable’ (de onvergetelijke) kreeg.
- Tito Rodriguez jr., Tito Puente jr. en Mario Grillo (Machito’s zoon) als The Big 3 Palladium Orchestra in 2004 een cd uitbrachten en daarna over de hele wereld toerden.

The topic of this weeks blog the famous Puertorican singer Tito Rodriguez (1923-1973)
Did you know that:
- Tito Rodriguez was honored in 1952 by the Century Conservatory of New York for his unique style of singing
- He was not only an incredible singer, he also played maracas and bongo.
- That with age 13 he already had his first musical contract in Puerto Rico
- After his parents died, Tito moved from Puerto Rico to New York in 1937. In New York he lived with his brother Johnny Rodriguez and played in his band for some years.
- That Tito was a vocalist for bands of famous bandleaders like Noro Morales, Xavier Cugat and José Curbelo, before he started his own band.
- That his band ‘The Tito Rodriguez Orchestra’ was one of the Big Palladium 3. The other two were Machito and Tito Puente.
- He rivaled with the other famous Tito (Puente) for years? In José Curbelo’s band they played together but when they went their own way, they started to compete with each other. The media played a big part in this. Reasons were record sales, or ‘who is going to sell out the Palladium ballroom.’
Although there was a rivalry, the two Tito’s respected each other very much.
- Tito was known for his ‘bolero’s. In the 1960’s the latin bands that were into mambo and chachacha started to change their styles more into salsa and boogaloo. Tito focussed on bolero.
- That his most famous song ‘Inolvidable’ (bolero) was the reason he got his nickname ‘El Inolvidable’ (the unforgettable).
- Tito Rodriguez jr., Tito Puente jr. and Mario Grillo (Machito’s son) recorded a cd in 2004 as the ‘Big 3 Palladium Orchestra’ and toured around the world.
